Oliphant Kite Spots - Revised May, 2013

By Daniel Medysky

Please note: vehicles are permitted on the beach.

North Oliphant is actually known as Sandy Bay Cove. It is the farthest bay north in the Oliphant Fishing Islands. There are two access points:

First is on the beach at the end of Spry Lake Rd. in front of the former Sandy Bay Cove Restaurant.

The second access point is further down the beach closer to the island and the gap. You can access this spot at the near the end of Mary Street. This area is pristine and clean with very shallow water and an expansive beach due to the low water levels of the great lakes. The water is flat to choppy and is ideal for beginners to experts. For this reason the local kite schools use this beach on W or NW winds.

The bay is large enough to accommodate fifty plus kiters and gets quite busy on long weekends in the summer. Kiters are asked to respect all signage and be considerate of all beach users especially swimmers in the water. The local environment group called the Friends of Oliphant Coastal Environments (http://fooce.org/) is working to preserve the natural ecosystem.

There are several camping resorts in Oliphant including Fiddlehead, Trillium and White Sands. If there's no wind you can take a boat tour and snorkel over shipwrecks in the crystal clear waters. For more info contact Fishing Island Tours

The old shipping port town of Wiarton is a short drive across the peninsula on the Georgian Bay side and offers all the amenities of a modern city. Sit back and enjoy what the Bruce Peninsula has to offer.
