The Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is one of the most amazing places in Hawaii to kite. The only caveat is that the wind is not always amazing... But on a solid trade day (East wind) the wind is either clean or mostly clean but super ridable and fun either way. When the wind comes around to the NE, it's 100% clean and perfect. But it's the terrain that makes this place amazing. Its a couple acre shallow white sand bar in the middle of a massive, totally protected bay. At low tide much of the area is ankle to knee deep. At high tide it's mostly knee to waist deep. Because the whole bay is protected by a barrier reef, there are virtually no waves inside and you're on nearly butter smooth water for miles and miles. However, if you want waves, as I frequently do, you can kite to the NW side of Kapapa Island from the sandbar and ride really nice waves there in mostly deep, clear water. There are also usually at least a dozen sea turtles there to keep you company.

You do need to get to this spot with a boat--either motor boat or kayaks. On the weekends the sandbar can be crowded but weekdays there are just a few boats and only around the perimeter of the sandbar where the deep water comes up into the shallows. So, even with a lot of boats, you have acres of shallow, flat water in the middle of the sandbar to enjoy.
